Hawaii saw an 8.4% increase in firearm permit applications in 2016 and a 14% increase in the number of firearms being registered. Even in the county Kauai.
Kauai, according to the article, frequently has the fewest number of applications per year. A possible reason for the increase last year is likely due to the fact that Kauai requires an application for permit, a two week waiting period and a background check for non-lethal items, such as pepper spray. The process is needed to purchase a firearm.
So, if given a choice between lethal and non-lethal self defense items, people opt for lethal. Who would have thought?
