In my lowly opinion:
The anti-gun crowd does not care about safety, it is an excuse and only cover. Don't let them use that anymore. It is well documented that it is not any safer in a society without guns, or that more guns means more crime.
Yes gun crime and shootings may go down, but murder and assault by other methods do not. There are always baseball bats, knives etc. I even read a few years back by someone smothering a person with a pillow, in Chicago!

You can make stats say what you want.

It's an excuse to get all, and I mean all, of the guns. They want your pistol, your rifle, your shotgun, your pellet gun, your BB gun and even your paintball gun. After that it most definitely will be your archery equipment, all of it. That is the real goal. What comes after that?
