AR based full auto firearm
« on: November 09, 2017, 01:42:04 AM »
So I was watching a video on the Forgotten Weapons YouTube channel I started wondering how I could build a full auto AR that fires from an open bolt instead of a closed bolt and make it feed from a belt that actually feed from mag well... Full auto open bolt part could be easy enough, just have a dropping sear holding the bolt in battery and have either a free floating firing pin that moves fully forward from the force of the bolt moving all the way forward into battery or just go with a fixed firing pin like a SMG, although that would require a safety like an SMG... Although with my idea for a side charging handle I could see it having to block both the trigger and the charging handle from fully strip a round... But then there's the question do I set it up more like a military rifle or more like a light machine gun and go with a longer and heavier barrel? I don't know why but I lean more often in video games I lean more towards to machine guns, who knows somewhere in my family history I could have some Russian in there, anyway, I'd be more apt to lean towards the light machine gun.

Anyway, any information would be really helpful and would be really appreciated. If this does end up happening I'll be sure to post pictures and videos somewhere, probably YouTube.

First off don't build anything of the sort unless you are a SOT FFL with a demo letter or you will go to prison. Making machineguns is illegal. Similar weapons exist so it can work. Just look in the usual places and buy one legally if you have to have one. The FPW used a open bolt and I think that there are transferable examples out there. Colt LMG also fired from open bolt but i don't know if there are transferable ones in existance. LWRC also makes a M6 that fires closed bolt semi and open bolt auto but they are a lot newer so would not be transferable except for le/mil.

Yeah, we're not going to be discussing how to make or convert automatic firearms on here.

I'll bet the Firing Port Weapon is the one that got his interest.  There are transferable FPW because there is one for auction that Forgotten Weapons has on their channel:

They're estimating it at $29-40k  https://jamesdjulia.com/item/52608-1-397/

The M6A4 was on Future Weapons

Honestly I don't remember what one it was that got me thinking about this. I'll have to re-watch the one on the port firing weapon since it's been a while but holy shit, that is a whole hell of a lot of money for that rifle

We can thank the Hughes Amendment to FOPA for that.  There's a limited supply (only pre-1986 automatics are transferable) so demand and price go way up.

Yeah, the M231 seems pretty much what I was thinking of. Although I think if I did build something like it the rate of fire would be a lot power, somewhere around 700 or 800 rounds a minute, it'd be piston operated instead of gas operated, and it goes without saying that it'd have sights, a stock, but the most interesting thing would be it feeding from a belt from a backpack feeder (provided I could find one) in 7.62 Nato, through the magazine well. Although I may just have to use an upper designed for belt feed if I can't find what I'm looking for...
