5.56 .223 difference
« on: March 09, 2015, 12:07:28 PM »
Hopefully someone can answer this here.  Are 5.56 and .223 the same or different.  I have heard both ways but can't find a concrete answer.  If different, how so??  Can either one be used in ar15?

They're pretty close but not exactly the same.  They're about the same length but chamber for 5.56 nato vs 223.  223 chamber is a little bit shorter.  Also 5.56 is rated for over 60000 psi and 223 is around 55000 psi.  You can shoot .223 in 5.56 gun but 5.56 in .223 might go BOOM in a bad way!

Ok thanks!  So is 5.56 like 2.23 +P?  My AR says 5.56 on it so I can shoot either in it right?

You're fine shooting either in a 5.56NATO AR15 as long as that's what it says on the barrel.  You can't go by just what is says on the lower since the same lower can fit different uppers with different barrels.

So what's a .223 WYLDE chamber?? I seen lots of those lately but I don't know what it is.  From the sounds of it it's like a wild ("wylde") card that can shoot either but it's for some reason more accurate than a regular 5.56 which can also shoot either one?
