Welcome to Fabulous SHOT Show, Las Vegas

http://blog.gunlink.info/2014/01/13/welcome-to-fabulous-shot-show-las-vegas-nv/

This week marks the 36th annual SHOT Show.  With attendees numbering over 60,000 in recent years and nearly 2,000 exhibitors, the industry trade show has come a long way from its humble beginnings in 1979 St. Louis.

The Shooting, Hunting and Outdoor Trades – SHOT – Show exhibits the latest and greatest products and information for a wide variety attendees.  From the latest hunting and camping gear to law enforcement equipment and techniques to the most up-to-date marketing and compliance information for firearms dealers.  And, of course, guns.  Lots and lots of wonderful new firearms of interest to the general shooting public.

SHOT Show 2014 Range Day Recap

SHOT Show 2014 Range Day Recap

http://blog.gunlink.info/2014/01/13/shot-show-2014-day-at-the-range-recap/

Another year’s SHOT Show range day at nearby Boulder City is in the can and it was as exciting as ever.  We got to see, handle and shoot a number of great new weapons.  The exhibitors had plenty to tell us, the range was well kept and, thanks to the RSOs (and everyone’s cooperation), safe.  As an added bonus, it wasn’t freezing cold and windy this year.  Winning!  Continue Reading...

(Almost) Zero Bulk CCW

(Almost) Zero Bulk Concealed Carry

http://blog.gunlink.info/2014/01/16/almost-zero-bulk-concealed-carry/

Tucking your CCW pistol into your waistband is a fast, easy way to conceal your firearm without adding the bulk (or expense) of a holster. However, this style of so-called “Mexican carry” is not without its issues.
...
For some time KelTec owners have enjoyed a beautifully simple improvement over simply cramming a loaded firearm into their pants:  a small clip that mounts to the frame of the gun to hold it in place.  Unfortunately this hasn’t been an option for owners of many other firearms.  Until recently.

Sticky Holsters Get a Welcome Update

Sticky Holsters Get a Welcome Update

http://blog.gunlink.info/2014/01/19/sticky-holsters-for-iwb-tuck-get-a-welcome-update/

The standard sticky holster has some sort of high-friction material on the outside of it that allows it to stay rock solid wherever you put it in your waistband.  The inner liner of the holster looks like ballistic nylon and allows the firearm to slip easily in and out when needed.  Sandwiched between the two is closed-cell foam that molds to your body and your firearm when wearing the holster, allowing the generically shaped holster to provide what seems like a custom fit.  This flexibility, while it works great in most cases, can cause issues on certain firearm models such as sight blades catching or magazine releases being pressed as we saw during our initial test.

At SHOT Show 2014, Sticky Holsters unveiled a welcome update that retains the flexibility and ease of use from the standard model with the added benefit of a form-fitting Kydex insert.  Instead of the ballistic nylon lining, the updated model has another layer of their “sticky” material that holds the Kydex insert in place.

GunLink Blog: It’s a Wrap for SHOT Show 2014
« Reply #4 on: January 19, 2014, 11:17:58 PM »

Another SHOT Show is wrapped up from the Sands Expo Center in Fabulous Las Vegas and attendees were treated to the introduction of many new products.  Some products will change the way you use your firearms, some are reinvented wheels and some are just plain “out there.”  Since SHOT Show is industry-only, the GunLink crew and friends were on hand to cover the show and help scratch your itch for firearms industry news until you (hopefully) get a chance to attend one of the other upcoming shows.

Meet The New Glock Pistols

http://blog.gunlink.info/2014/01/17/meet-the-new-glock-pistols/

At SHOT Show 2014 Glock showcased two new pistols, their smallest model made to date alongside one of the largest: the G42 .380 and the G41 Gen 4 .45ACP.  We got to handle and shoot both new buzzworthy pistols at Media Day at the Range in nearby Boulder City the day before the official show opening.

The G41, which Glock is touting as “practical/tactical,” is essentially a G21 but, instead of a 4.6″ barrel and 6.77″ sight radius, it gets stretched out with a 5.31″ barrel and 7.56″ sight radius while still managing to shave off 2.3oz.  While certainly not helping improve concealability, the longer sight radius should help improve accuracy – a welcome trait whether your life is on the line or you’re just trying to win a match.  The extra barrel and slide length make the G41 feel more balanced than a G21 and also improve the already more-than-managable felt recoil and muzzle rise from the hefty .45, making it easier to get back on target for follow-on shots.

At the opposite end of the size spectrum, riding the wave of popular tiny .380 sub-compact CCW pistols flooding the market, is the G42.  At just over 14 oz fully loaded, less than 6″ long (with a 3.25″ barrel), 4.13″ high and a mere 0.94″ wide, the G42 will easily disappear in a pocket, purse or IWB holster.  Despite the diminutive caliber, it will conceal completely and comfortably and it is, no doubt, far better than asking a mugger or rapist to please stop.

Remington’s New R51 and John Pedersen’s Legacy

http://blog.gunlink.info/2014/01/20/remingtons-new-r51-and-john-pedersens-legacy/

The original Model 51, marketed as a pocket pistol and available in .380 and .32 ACP, never enjoyed widespread commercial  success despite many considering the locking mechanism to be superior to Browning’s design and describing it as ahead of its time.  Pedersen’s legacy, and that of the Model 51, lives on with Remington’s introduction of the R51 pistol at SHOT Show 2014.  continue reading...

Trigger Time Behind Long Range Smart Optics
http://blog.gunlink.info/2014/01/21/trigger-time-behind-long-range-smart-optics/

One of the most exciting things we got to see at range day was a pair of siblings from the smart optics family:  the Tracking Point Xact system and its little brother, the new Remington 2020 system.  Despite getting behind the Tracking Point for some simulation last year, this was my first time sending live rounds downrange with it.  Way downrange.  We punished the nearly 1000 yard target with the .300 Win Mag version and, since misery loves company, we put a hurting on the 350+ yard target with the .30-06 Remington 700 with the 2020 on top.  continue reading...

with the way things have been going I would wait until they get the kinks worked out before I bought a fancy new pistol like those.  Its probably not as bad for the glocks since it is pretty much the same tech as all their other pistols but it seems like almost every time a big name company comes out with a new pistol design it ends up getting recalled for safety isues.  I guess they can't test every scenario in house but i don't want to be the guy that discovers a safety problem by accident.

Device Makes it Easier to Rack Semi Auto Pistol
http://blog.gunlink.info/2014/01/25/device-makes-it-easier-to-rack-semi-auto-pistol/

Ever grabbed your semi-automatic pistol to rack the slide and had trouble overcoming the stiff recoil spring (or springs, since many of today’s pistols have dual recoil springs)?  Have your shooting buddies or gun shop salesmen recommended revolvers to make things easier?  Whether you struggle with slides due to injury, arthritis or just insufficient grip strength, a gunsmith in Iowa has come up with a brilliantly simple solution to help you enjoy your semi-autos again.  continue reading...

3-Gun Nation Rumble on the Range Championship 2014
http://blog.gunlink.info/2014/01/17/3gn-rumble-on-the-range-2014/

...
The quarter finals saw Daniel Horner, Greg Jordan, Mike Voigt and Taran Butler advance to the semis where Jordan defeated Horner and Taran Butler bested Voigt.  The action packed best-of-three finals certainly didn’t disappoint, either.  Everyone thought that Jordan had it in the bag after it seemed he took the best of two right out of the gate, but it turned out that Butler had scored a hit on a target that remained standing and, by rule, that round had to be shot again.  On the second try, with Jordan still ahead by a round, Butler tied things up.  Down to the wire on the third and final round, Jordan squeezed out a win and took home the $50,000 prize.
