Terminal Ballistics Test Data (FBI Gelatin Tests)
« on: August 05, 2011, 10:02:05 AM »
Continuing on with the posting of information on terminal ballistics (see thread on FBI Report on Handgun Wounding Factors and Effectiveness), the following information may be of use to people when considering what to load their CCW, personal defense and home defense firearms with.

The full version of the chart in PDF format is available here, with a much abbreviated version below.

There are many factors that go into choosing whether to even own or carry a firearm for personal protection, how to carry it on or about your person, how to store it in the home or vehicle and which loads to put in it.  No one factor can determine for you which load to put in a defensive firearm but, hopefully, this information is a useful piece of that puzzle.

How to read the data
The fields given in each row are:

{caliber} {load} {bullet mass@muzzle vel.} {bullet momentum} {muzzle energy} {penetration} {recovered diameter} {wound volume} {penetration} {recovered diameter} {wound volume} {average wound volume} {free recoil} {avg wound volume per unit free recoil}

With the bullet mass given in grains, muzzle velocity given in feet per second, bullet momentum given in pounds feet per second, muzzle energy given in foot-pounds and free recoil given assuming a 1.88 pound pistol.

Two sets of  {penetration} {recovered diameter} {wound volume} are given, with the first representing data for rounds fired at bare gelatin and the second representing data for rounds fired at clothed gelatin.
