Title: SHOT 2014 picture thread
Post by: PrimerMedia on January 14, 2014, 10:27:19 AM
Lets start things off with some shots from the media day at the range.

Seen here is the Sphinx in compact (left) and full size (right). The two compacts wear a full size and compact suppressors that will be available as well.

While the regular Sphinx was a very good shooter, what I am really excited about is this all steel version. The trigger is amazing.

More to come later today, once I am able to catch up on photo editing.

Korth's new PRS pistol, it's amazingly complex...  The pistol is a very smooth and light shooter. It doesn't feel like any .45 I've ever shot.  Like everything German, it's complicated, expensive, and completely worth it because it's so well made.

Reinventing the wheel-gun, Korth's revolver in .357 Mag. This is one of the most impressive revolvers I have ever shot. The trigger is second to none.  The Korth revolver also has quick change cylinders and non-typical controls.

***ETA***

I asked the guys from Korth why they built this pistol, to paraphrase... "Ve vahnted to create ah revolutionary and modern pistol, so ve used ah 100 year old design as ah base, vith the 50 year old operating system from ah HK G3." Regardless of the irony, their repatriation of old designs is inexplicably interesting.

The Korth PRS is/will be highly configurable. There will be a variety of barrel lengths from 4"-8" in various caliber's, and with the option to bolt on awkward rail blocks...

Marvel at the complexity!

I want one, but not with white grips...

The Glock 41 & 42, the biggest and smallest Glocks ever.

To be honest, I could not care less about the 42.  If it was a 9mm, I'd be excited for it, but it's not...

The 41 however is pretty awesome.  I think I'll be selling my 21 soon to get one.

**ETA**

The Glock 41 is something to get really excited about. This thing was a blast to shot on Monday. Fun fact, While it's the same frame as the 21, it uses the upper from the 34/35, but without the cutout. Because it's longer than the 21, they didn't need a bulky top half to achieve the optimal mass. I personally think this is the most interesting Glock to date, only rivaled by the 24C.

Glock 42, It's small, wooooo!

This pretty much echoes my impression of the new Glocks.  The 41 was great to shoot but, with as small and light as they're making everything (eg sub-compact 9mm pistols) I don't undstand the .380 revival.

I'll should be shooting the Sphinx today, so I will have a better idea about it.  From handling it at the range on Monday it seems like a nice enough pistol.

We also have more coming about the entire new group of small pistols, including all of the .380s, the Remington R51, and more.

Sorry for the delay in post to this thread.  On my flight back from SHOT I lost my hard drive with everything on it!  So I'm only able to post what I was able to put up on Facebook during the show, and some stuff I had on my CF card from the last day.

The Tac-Con trigger.

The Tac-Con trigger does let you shoot fast, but I'm still undecided if that's because of the sear, or if it's just a really good single stage trigger. Two magazines doesn't really give you a good feel for what it's all about.

New from Daniel Defense this year will be FDE factory rifles. The model pictured is their lightweight. The rail system is still anodized, while the receivers are Cerakoted.

DD will also be making a Mk12, they claim shoots 5/8 MOA groups with 77gn match ammo. It was impossible to evaluate on a 30 yard range while standing, but I'm inclined to believe them.

Nothing new here. Daniel Defense brought out a Mk18 because who doesn't like mag dumps out of a 10.3" barrel with a Surefire brake?

HK has a new Key-mod rail for the MR556/416 line of rifles, along with a new suppressor being manufactured by Operators Suppressor Systems.

The new suppressor from HK is very effective.

3D printed cross sections of their new suppressor design.

It does sort of look good, and it works really well, that's what maters anyway.

The end of their new suppressor looks like the mouth of a lamprey. Just saying...

Smith & Wesson never fails to come up with some of the finest and most interesting wheel guns made. I am admittedly a fan-boy... I also have a soft spot for absolutely absurd large caliber revolvers. So this snubby 460 immediately caught my attention, particularly because I prefer the look of un-fluted cylinders. This one is on my list of must owns, plus I'd love to run it head to head against my 454 Casull Ruger Super Redhawk Alaskan that produces 1100+ fps from it's 2.5" barrel. So I would love to know what kind of velocity a short S&W 460 would generate.

The Smith & Wesson Performance Center also had this very nice 9mm at the range. It's typical PC fair, tight fit, smooth action, and a fantastic trigger but in a cheap to shoot caliber. It also has very attractive blacked out controls.

The Sako TRG M10 is not yet available to the plebeian masses, so any opportunity to shoot one is not to be missed.

This particular TRG M10 was chambered in .308, and dead on at 300 yards with factory ammo. The trigger and ergonomics were to my liking, and the controls and adjustments are fairly intuitive. Any platform that lets you shoot MOA or better with no prior experience and no rest is impressive.

One of the best features is the micro adjustable monopod. With just the twirl of your thumb you can bring the rifle on target.

The Remington Arms Company 2020 developed by TrackingPoint is exactly the same as their original XS series, but without the guided trigger. So as long as you don't have a jerky trigger finger, it'll work pretty damn well.

Burris has a whole bunch of very promising new scopes in their Xtream Tactical series, including this 1.5-8X. The glass is clear and sharp ad they have all the features people expect now days.   However I was a little disappointed by the soft clicks of the turrets, and with a list price of $1500-$1727 (depending on options), I don't know if these are really going to be able to compete with the old guard.

SWORD International was showing off their semi-auto .338 Lapua at the range. Unfortunately you couldn't shoot it. It's basically a giant gas piston SR, but that over simplified explanation as there was obviously a lot of R&D involved. Because they realize the value in computability with standard AR parts, it takes regular AR fire control components, and the controls carry over for the most part. The big design feature is their nonreciprocating charging handle. They did mention plans to create .308 and 5.56 rifles with the same piston and side-charging features.

Desert Tech is stepping into the semi-auto game with this very promising bullpup design. Right now they are a combination of functional parts and 3D printed parts (are you starting to notice the trend yet). The design is multi-caliber, giving the user the option to switch from .308 down to .556 based cartridges. As you may have already noticed the one on top has got a .308 magazine in it. We should hopefully see these before the end of the year.

The Desert Tech bullpup is fully ambidextrous, with a forward ejection pattern, so you're hot brass will be flying out of that hole above the magazine. The non-reciprocating charging handle can be swapped to either side too.

Desert Tech was also displaying their chassis system for the Remington 700 platform. It's very competitively priced for a side folder, coming around $800, but jumping up to $1100 if you want the rear monopod.

The ALG Glock optic mount is awesome. This is a must have for my long slide.

Like the rest of ALG's products, this is very well made and seems to be a rock solid mount.

Samson Manufacturing has a new QD optics mount. I got to play with the prototype back in October, and it's exciting now see the real thing. This mount is like nothing else on the market, the mount is secured onto a rail with a twisting motion then locked in place. It provides a great deal of mechanical advantage over the traditional cam designs. There is much less struggling to get an optic off your weapon with one of these.

In addition to the new mounts, Samson Manufacturing's new design is finding it's way onto all their current products too. Here you can also see the very precise and secure tension adjustment on the opposite side of the Micro mount.

Another look at the new optics mount from Samson Manufacturing. They really have taken an entirely new approach to the design of QD mounts.

At last! A Key Mod rail that uses a standard barrel nut! Owners of 14.5" barrels with pinned muzzle devices rejoice! And because it's Samson Manufacturing and they're clever, you can use their Evo accessories or Key Mod accessories with this rail. 2 for 1, I'll take it!

You might have said to your self that these look a lot like the old Premier Reticles optics. We'll you'd be half right. Tangent Theta absorbed the failing company took all the technology that was working for Premier, improved it, and then fixed everything that wasn't working. While there are a few dimensional and visual similarities, it's a completely new scope. The Glass is what you'd expect, amazing, and they have vastly improved the turrets to eliminate the breakage that plagued the Premier line.

Tangent Theta has a very impressive lineup of new glass for the show. If you can't figure it out by the name, their sort of nerdy, but that's good because these might be some of the best scopes I've looked through so far. Have probably never heard of Tangent Theta before, but don't worry, they have roots that run deep when it comes to making premium optics.

When I first saw these scopes I know they would be high end, but it wasn't until I turned the knobs and felt the precise and clear indexing for each click that I knew these were indeed S&B fighters.

The Crye Precision SIX12 Modular Revolver Shotgun is intended to give an end user a better option for under slung shotguns. The firing mechanism is a double action stroker fire, so like a revolver you rotate the cylinder with the trigger.

Seekins Precision had their new .308 on display. This rifle has a lot going for it. The fit and finish is second to none, and at it's heart is a nitrated 5R barrel, need I say more?  I really can't say enough good things about this rifle. You have to get your hand on it to appreciate how well it's constructed. Now I just want to know how it shoots!

Take note everyone, Seekins Precision is the first company to do a properly ambidextrous lower for a .308! I don't know why it took the industry so long to figure this out while we wasted time with the bolt release "ambi" lowers. Anyway, congrats Seekins on doing it right. This has been something I've always wanted.

The Megalithic upper is probably the AR part I'm most excited about this year.

This is it, Mega Arms big release for SHOT 2014, their new not-monolithic upper call the Megalithic. They found a very clever way to get around that pesky LMT patten by incorporating a level into the upper, breaking the continuous top rail.  They will also be doing a .308 version of the Megalithic.

A look at that wonderful level that's going to allow us all to enjoy a one piece Mega Arms upper for future builds.

Diamondhead-USA has a new polymer sight coming out that will retail just above $100 for the set. These sight have phosphorus inserts, and as you can see here, they glow very bright with a little charge.

Here it is, the KelTech RDB. It will be expensive, if I'm remembering correctly, around $1700 and even more for the M43 version that wan't here.

The KelTech RDB feels really well balanced, and if they do as good of a job with this as they did with the RFB, it'll be a great firearm, they just need to bring down the price.

The best AR mags on the market just got bigger. These are Lancer's .308 (SR25/DPMS pattern) prototypes, no clear ETA on a production version. They must be close as the molds are clearly running to make these.

Here it is, the civilian version of the Sig Sauer MPX. It will initially roll-out as a pistol, but there are plans for a 16" version. Apparently the ATF said no to their original idea of just pinning the baffles from the MPX's suppressor to achieve a 16" OAL. The ATF must think we're a bunch of delinquents... I am willing to bet that they will also offer it with the "arm brace" that we've all come to appreciate.

Being clever, Sig Sauer is using a standard 1913 rail interface to attach stocks. I might as well start filling out a Form 1 now...

Moro Vision has become one of my favoriate booths at SHOT. They always seem to have the most interesting and useful night vision accessories. Last year it was a Gen 3 tube you could mount directly on a DSLR that used standard lenses to produce full frame images at the focal range of your choosing. This year they have a system that allows you mount your PVS-14 in front of a day optic. Anything that makes your PVS 14 more versatile is a good thing in my book. Especially considering the cost of a PVS-22 unit...

SRM has updated their shotgun with a few new improvements, including the use of Zytel in the plastic components. Most noticeable is the billet receiver that gives the shotgun sharper lines.

SRM will also be releasing a model that's designed specifically to work with less than lethal ammunition. It will come from the factory in that orange color so that prison guards and riot police know which shotgun to grab during a stressful situation...

Here is one of the SHOT Show debuts that I personally find very interesting. This is the new 416 Hushpuppy from AM-TAC. It use a standard-unmodified AR mag and bolt, and lets you push a 415 grain slug out of an AR. As you may have guessed from the name, it's designed as a sub-sonic round, but they are also developing a round for those of us unlucky enough to live in states that don't allow cans. As this cartridge will be lower velocity that every other .416 round they have developed it to achieve rapid yaw on impact and cavitate a target by tumbling through it instead of expanding or fragmenting.

You can read more about the AM-TAC 416 Hushpuppy here - https://www.facebook.com/photo.php?fbid=650082415055881&set=pb.174876979243096.-2207520000.1389884186.&type (https://www.facebook.com/photo.php?fbid=650082415055881&set=pb.174876979243096.-2207520000.1389884186.&type)

AM-TAC also have a new Key Mod rails out. It utilizes a very robust barrel nut and is an incredibly stable rail vs. other long forends. The bonus feature being that you can mount a QD sling swivel directly into any of the Key Mod slots.

Palmetto State Armory has yet to finalize pricing on their new .308, but it should be $1300-$1500. They also said that .308 rifles will have hammer forged FN barrels, so that price seems pretty fair to me.  I asked about the availability of receivers, and it will be happening.

Your eyes are no deceiving you, Palmetto State Armory is working on a 1911.  I dared to say it on the show floor, and I'll say it again. The Palmetto State Armory 1911 are as tight as my Dan Wesson Firearms Point Man 7. I was able to meet the gunsmith who is in charge of the project, and I have to give him credit for being a perfectionist. There is still no ETA for these because they're still being refined, mostly trigger work. Even in their current state they are on par with the Kimber's, Springfield's and Colts, in my opinion. I am anxious for the production version, and the price tag...

The new thing from GA Precision this year is reduced weight. They have gotten feedback from many of their users that they "love their 17lb rifles, but wish they were more 14lbs" particularly for hunting. George was quick to oblige. GA Precision has reduced weight through the use of a split rail receiver, and the new carbon fiber Manners Composite Stocks, and a lighter profile barrels. The rifle is as accurate as any GAP, but if you want to string together 15-20 shot groups, it's not going to keep up; but if you're hunting I really hope you don't need to put that many rounds down range...

GA Precision has also developed a new 6mm cartridge that they claim is one of the flattest shooting rounds ever made.

You can also see the carbon fiber weave in the new Manners Composite Stocks. I really wish I didn't loos all the photos of the Manners stocks that were on my hard drive, these they were one of my favorite new products from the show.

As you may know, GA Precision has a close working relationship with Bushnell. The new LRHS was on display at the GA Precision booth, and it's got the clearest glass I've ever seen on a Bushnell. The glass is on par with Nightforce and US Optics, and a great option for hunting, if you can afford it...

Timney has a new trigger for the Remington 700 platform with a crisp 8oz brake.  I'm excited to pit it against a Jewell.

Tavor owners can rejoice that Timney is now making a trigger pack for them. The trigger doesn't feel quite as good as the ones they make for AR's. It's got a little creep and feels a bit spongy (for a Timney), but it's a bullpup, so I'm probably expecting more than I should; either way, it's a huge improvement over the stock trigger.

For about $900 you can get a 9mm conversion for your IMI Tavor. For $900 you can also buy a lot of 5.56, or a 9mm carbine.  If the 9mm Tavor wasn't so damn expensive it would be really appealing.

On the left, the Wilcox RAPTAR Lite ES, and on the right the Wilcox RAPTAR. The visible and IR lasers in both of these units adjust together, so you only have to do one zero. The most obvious difference is that the Lite ES, has a light, where as the regular RAPTAR has a laser range finder that is effective out beyond 1000 meters. As you would expect the price difference is huge, with the Lite selling for around $1500, and the ranging RAPTAR selling for over $4k (I can't recall the exact price). The Lite ES is also civilian legal with a Class1 0.7mw laser!

I think I have found a replacement for my Surefire X300 that's currently on my SBR... This is the Laser Devices DBAL-PL. A civilian Legal DBAL-PL has two operational modes, 500 lumen white light and 5mW red or green laser; or Class 1 IR Laser with 600mW eye-safe LED illuminator.

This is no ordinary PVS-4. TNVC has taken the old units and replaced everything so you have all new seas and rubber. They have also upgraded the internals to Gen 3 tubes. These old-new PVS-4 units will cost around $3000.

Finally, I got my hands on the new KMR from BCM! There are a lot of good options on the market right now, but this may be the best, it's also ver light.

Leica Geovid binoculars. These things are very cool, they do a lot more than just ranging. It allows you to customize ballistics curve for your load via micro-SD card, and displays atmospheric conditions (temp, pressure, incline) for input into an external ballistics app.

Unity Tactical had some ATOM slide equipped Glocks on display to the TNVC booth. We all know the slides are nice, but what had my attention was their trigger. It's intended as an upgrade for duty pistols with a 5lb pull, but it breaks so nicely I though it was a sub-3lb trigger. I might run one in my target Glock as is, bit I really hope they decide to do a lighter version eventually. They didn't say when it will be available...

And that concludes my coverage of SHOT 2014.  There would be more, but again, the hard drive...

The Tac-Con trigger.

Tac-Con Trigger 1 (https://scontent-b-lga.xx.fbcdn.net/hphotos-prn1/1497702_265711593582162_2040413747_n.jpg)

The Tac-Con trigger does let you shoot fast, but I'm still undecided if that's because of the sear, or if it's just a really good single stage trigger. Two magazines doesn't really give you a good feel for what it's all about.
Tac-Con Trigger 2 (https://scontent-a-lga.xx.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ash3/1511112_265711590248829_1984105658_n.jpg)

I couldn't get this thing to run as fast as some of the other folks I saw at the line but I'm sure I did better than I would have last year in the 0 Kelvin temperatures.  I bet with practice, one could get it going pretty quick.

It was a nice trigger, to be sure, but I think they might be over-hyping it a bit.  The "Man, this thing is fast.  It even comes with an ATF letter (http://tacfirecon.com/wp-content/uploads/TAC-CON-TM-ATF-Compliant-Letter.pdf) saying it isn't an NFA item"  line just felt like a solid marketing ploy - it's not shocking that the ATF FTB found that the Tac-Con trigger doesn't turn a semi-auto AR into a machine gun.

The third mode provides "positive reset" of the trigger so that by the time the bolt is finished cycling, the trigger is reset for another short 4.5# match grade semi-auto shot, letting you rattle off shots as quickly as you can move your trigger and as accurately as your rifle and your abilities will allow.  The guy their range day shooting bay described it as "instead of increasing the cycle time of the action, they reduce the cycle time of the trigger."

They consistently bring good stuff to show off.
