The movie guns thread
« on: July 16, 2011, 09:24:14 PM »
Let's have a thread about firearms in movies.  Real or fictional is fine.

Clearly I'm a fan of Sharps rifles and Quigley.

What are some of your favorite (or least favorite...or even just interesting) movie guns?  Ever spot any really bad/cheesy gun mistakes in movies?

The biggest mistake I see in movies is they never have to reload.  That is enough to make me say "Jeeze, Enough already!" and quit watching them.

I have not watched an action packed adventure in a few years.

One of my favorite (if not my most favorite) movies is Tombstone, which has lots of great gun play.  Young Guns and HEAT both have plenty of great gun play too.  Way of the Gun has a pretty good shootout too.

I always love seeing the governator shooting the mini in Terminator 2

I like the shoot-em-up scenes and the various ways of carrying their guns in El Mariachi/Desperado/Once Upon a Time in Mexico.

I would be remiss if I didn't also mention Dirty Harry's .44 magnum.  Do you feel luck, punk?

By the way, if you ever spot a gun in a movie that you want to identify, there is a site called Internet Movie Firearms Database (IMFDB) that is great for that.  I could spend almost as much time surfing that site as I do wikipedia.

Oh, man!  We watched Smokin' Aces 2 the other day on Netflix streaming and it was awesome.  My better half fell asleep (somehow) during the movie, but I loved it enough that I gave it 5/5 stars :p

With tons of gun-play, it's basically several huge shootout scenes.  According to IMFDB, the guns used were:

Handguns
Beretta PX4 Storm Sub-Compact
Taurus PT92
Glock 17
Walther PPK
Colt Single Action Army
Luger P08
Beretta 92FS
Smith & Wesson Model 64
Ruger GP101
Unknown M1911 compact variant

Submachine Guns
SA Vz.61 Skorpion

Shotguns
Mossberg 500
12 Gauge Double Barreled Shotgun
Franchi PA3/215

Assault Rifles
AKMSU
M4A1

Machine Guns
Hand-Held GE M134 Minigun

Sniper Rifles
Savage 10/110

Heavy Weapons
RPG-7

Great flick.  I highly recommend it if you're looking for something to watch with plenty of action, shootouts, stuff blowing up, etc. without having to worry too much about plot.  Plus the smoking-hot gun-toting female eye candy doesn't hurt.

Got bored and decided to watch a real classic on Netflix a few days ago...Broken Arrow with John Travolta and Christian Slater.  Apparently I forgot how much gun play there was in that movie.

There are a lot of neat firearms in the movie, but one in particular really caught my eye.  By "caught my eye" I mean I saw it and thought to myself "who are they trying to fool?  What kind of goofy hollywood prop gun is that?"  So I ended up getting online and looking it up on IMFDB.  It ended up being a real gun and a pretty awesome one at that:  A Beretta 93R, the model 92's more awesome full-auto big brother.

From Wikipedia:
Quote
The Beretta Model 93R is a selective-fire machine pistol, designed and manufactured by the Italian Beretta company in the 1970s for police and military use, that is derived from their semi-automatic Model 92. The "R" stands for Raffica, which means "burst" in Italian.

A selector switch and a folding fore grip enables the operator to fire three-round bursts (at a cyclic rate of 1100 rounds per minute) with each pull of the trigger. The designers restricted the fire selector to bursts, rather than fully automatic firing, for sufficient recoil control. The 93R is essentially a Beretta 92 series pistol, but its design calls for a single action trigger, a muzzle brake, a detachable shoulder stock, and a 20-round magazine. The folding grip, just ahead of the trigger guard, provides enhanced recoil control. With use of this grip, the operator's hands are further spaced, providing increased stability.

The Beretta 93R is out of production.

Pretty cool, right?

Anyway, I just figured I'd share in case anyone else was bored and wanted to see a decent action flick with a high round count.  IMFDB lists the following as the list of guns in the movie:

    * 1 Handguns
          o 1.1 Beretta 92FS (Stainless Slide)
          o 1.2 Beretta 92FS
          o 1.3 Beretta 93R
          o 1.4 Smith & Wesson Model 66
          o 1.5 SIG-Sauer P226
          o 1.6 SIG-Sauer P228
    * 2 Submachine Guns
          o 2.1 Beretta Model 12
          o 2.2 Heckler & Koch HK94 (chopped and converted)
          o 2.3 Heckler & Koch MP5K
          o 2.4 Uzi
          o 2.5 Micro Uzi
    * 3 Assault Rifles
          o 3.1 Heckler & Koch G3A3
          o 3.2 M727 with M203 grenade launcher
          o 3.3 Ruger AC-556K
          o 3.4 M16A2
          o 3.5 Colt XM177
          o 3.6 Custom AR-15
          o 3.7 IMI Galil
    * 4 Shotguns
          o 4.1 Mossberg 590
    * 5 Heavy Weapons
          o 5.1 M134 minigun
          o 5.2 B83 Thermonuclear Device

This is why one of my favorites is Last Man Standing. Although Bruce Willis doesn't change mags every 7 rounds as you would expect, he does change mags.

And there is the one scene of him sitting at the table, loading a whole table full of magazines. I love it.

I call that bold talk for a one-eyed fat man.

Clip? Magazine? I don't care. I've taken The Pledge.

Or characters are running perpendicular to machine gun fire and it always seems to miss.

I watched Shooter again the other day. I enjoy the shoot out scene at the cabin.

Not really a movie, but I attended a Penn and Teller show in Las Vegas a few years back where they did their magic bullet trick (the one where they shoot at each other through glass and catch the bullet in their teeth). If I remember correctly, they were shooting .38s, and I don't know what kind of bullets they were shooting, but it didn't sound like any .38 I've ever heard. I'm guessing a custom load?

Any thoughts on this illusion?

Re watching Bourne Identity and saw something that gave me a laugh and made me think of this thread.

right before he chases Clive Owen into the field, Owen is shooting a Sig SG550 with a slip-on silencer that just slides right over the unported barrel.  The 'silencer' looks to be an AR15 free float handguard.  :o

We watched The Equalizer tonight. Noticed the above from the cop's revolver. How is he going to protect himself from the crazy Russian assassin that way?
