What exactly is this?  Even though I probably wouldn't be able to make it, it does sound cool.

A couple visits ago, my better half's grandpa and I were rooting around through his closet and he gave me a bunch of old cartridges and other stuff.  Black powder shotgun shells, 8 and 10 gauge shells, cardboard hulls, some of them even still in the original boxes and other stuff like that.  I've never got around to it, but my plan is to make a shadowbox type thing out of them; sort of like the little displays they have inside the tables at the food court in Cabela's.

Is that the sort of thing this is or am I way off base?

I think you got it right on the head.  I never knew that people collected different cartridges.  Head stamps, caliber, weird stuff that barely, if ever, made it out of the testing range.  I saw a collection on another forum and was just astounded by the number of different types.

I collect old ammo boxes myself.  I think the old artwork is beautiful and reminds me of a simpler time, when I did not have to care about bills, mortgages or cars.

I've seen some pretty interesting displays of cartridges.  As mentioned, Cabela's usually has something like that inside of their tables.  I've also seen ones like this one from the manufacturer to show off all their loads

I have never been much for collecting them.  If I get them, I'll shoot them :D
