LateNiteIT's Project Appleseed AQT Timer Android App
« on: September 08, 2012, 07:52:02 PM »
We've been playing around with a couple of Project Appleseed related android apps that are available online from a developer called LateNiteIT.  See our review of the AQT Scoring App here.

One app is an AQT (army qualification test) timer app.  Project Appleseed uses a "quick and dirty AQT" to assess participants' shooting skills.  The test is shot in four stages:

  • fire 10 shots at one target in two minutes while standing
  • transition from standing to sitting or kneeling, fire two shots at one target, mag change, three more rounds at that target and five at another
  • transition from standing to prone, fire two shots at a target, mag change, another shot at the first target, three shots at a second target and four shots at a third
  • fire two rounds each at two targets and three rounds each at two other targets while prone

During the Project Appleseed test, a specific order of events with specific timings is followed.  The order, timing, etc. is kept by a script that the shoot boss follows that includes preparation time, loading, shooting the stage, cease fire, and making the line cold.

The Appleseed AQT Timing app (available from the Google Play store as well as other sources) plays the part of the shoot boss by keeping track of times and giving the test's voice commands.  I've been to a couple Appleseeds and there are almost always multiple shooters who don't complete a stage because the time goes by faster than they think; especially on the first couple test attempts.  Once shooters have a few tests under their belts and get a feel for the test, they do better.  "Practice makes perfect."

This app makes it easy to drill for the Appleseed AQT on your own time.  Preparation time (which defaults to 120 seconds) is adjustable, as is the percentage of time for the fire sequence.  Using the default settings, the timings are as follows (times in seconds):

120 (prep period)
5 (prep ended)
5 (load)
8 (line ready?)
120 (fire first stage)
5 (cease fire)
10 (unload and clear)
120 (prep period)
5 (prep ended)
5 (load)
8 (Line Ready?)
55 (fire second stage)
5 (cease fire)
10 (unload and clear)
120 (prep period)
5 (prep ended)
5 (load)
8 (line ready?)
65 (fire third stage)
5 (cease fire)
10 (unload and clear)
120 (prep period)
5 (prep ended)
5 (load)
8 (line ready?)
300 (fire fourth stage)
5 (cease fire)
10 (unload and clear)

Another app from this developer says that they used Android App Inventor to create the app (which I imagine also holds true for this app), which they say accounts for it's relatively large size (4MB installed).

All in all, it seems to be a pretty good app and does what it's supposed to do, especially given that it's a free app.  Of course, you could shoot at the AQT or another target at your own pace for basic marksmanship practice, but this is a great way to "turn on the pressure" that you might experience while shooting the real test and get an idea of what the timings are like.

We can, however, see some potential features that could be included in future releases.  We didn't like that you have to use the menu key to exit (and confirm exit) from the app.  Using the device's back button seems to close the app, which you find out is not the case when you stick your phone back in your pocket and a couple minutes later your pants are yelling "cease fire!"  The ability to move the app from internal memory to an SD card would also be nice.
