Magnum Research "BFR" - 8", .45-70

Here is one of the ''hand cannon'' category revolvers which comes with a free dose of grin! It is a blast to shoot. Chosen as 45-70 caliber much as anything because that old round is so versatile when being able to reload. The Holosight, although not for everyone very pretty - makes for an excellent sighting system.

45-70 Govt was originally of course a black powder round but as a smokeless has a usefully low pressure profile. For trap door use and old guns a load around 25,000 CUP is at the bottom end but for something like the BFR this can be well cranked up to over the 30,000 region. With a 405 grain Lasercast SWC there is about 1550 ft lbs at the muzzle which is more than useful but leaves things quite comfortable and controllable.  Reloading is essential to 'escape' the low power' factory offerings.

This gun will hit a steel plate at 100 yards every time.  May have posted it already on the forum but it deserves another slot I think!

The BFR got a shoutout in our blog entry Governor Opposes Judge on Self Defense Handgun Issue about big, heavy, multi-caliber revolvers.

The info we had on the .45/.410 BFR had it at 4.5lbs, how does yours weigh in?  Can't imagine it's much fun to lug around.

4.5 lbs !!!  No way!  Well, unless there is some super extra-long barrel version I didn't know about.  Mine, as in picture weighs almosr exactly 3.5lbs - cylinder empty.  I suppose if you add 5 45-70 rounds in cylinder then yeah, bit heavier - by about 0.46 ounces.

It isn't too bad to lug around - I have a large hunting holster with a chest harness - that then sits diagonally across my upper left chest and is very comfortable, and an easy draw.

As for use as my CCW - haha - I'll stick to my EDC SIG!

I like your 45-70. Nice looking piece.
I have a Judge, anniversary gift, which is good enough in itself. 
I think the Judge has it's place, but to be effective it has to be very close, as in, VERY CLOSE. I usually use it in the car when I travel from IL-A-NOID. There have been ammo improvements, handgun 410 ammo, PDX1 defensive ammo etc, but from what I have seen with my practice, it is still effective at only very close ranges. Which is where most things happen btw.
Are there other good, maybe even better options, most certainly, but I do like it.
Once again nice piece! I would like to try this one out.
