SHOT 2013 AR15 & .308 AR
« on: January 15, 2013, 02:24:28 AM »
Everything and anything AR related form SHOT 2013...

Let's start off with something awesome, the Daniel Defense ISR in 300blk.  This is Daniel Defense's first time making a suppressor, and it's integrated into the barrel assembly with an overall length of 16"; So for the civilian version it will only require one tax stamp.  It's an amazingly controllable gun, the felt recoil is less than that of a regular 5.56 AR, which could be attributed to the extra weight of the suppressor out front.  The demo rifle had go-fast internals, and even with a high cyclical rate, it's easy to keep on target.

The ISR demo had seen about 2500 rounds in one day without cleaning, and it was still running strong.

Colt Competition Rifles had some nice sticks on hand, these are mainly oriented towards the 3-gun crowd; and all come with a sub-MOA guarente.  The most notable feature is the unique adjustable gas system.  The three chamber break is also very effective, on a .223 it's hard to tell, but the recoil reduction is noticeable on the .308 rifles.  These also come with a geissele fire control group, so you won't have to bother upgrading later.

Fostech was showing off their beautifully machined bumpski stock.  These are around $500 ($150 more than the competition), however, I'd be happy to spend the extra money for one of these...  The Fostech stock looks really clean, and doesn't detract from the appearance of the rifle.  The machined aluminum stock is also much smoother than a plastic slide fire stock, so it's east to operate with a .22 or 9mm configuration.  It also has a nice integrated check rest.

In case you're trying to get mags for your AR, like everyone else, try befriending someone at CAA, they have some...

CAA was also showing off their new windowed mag, which now features a window on both sides as apposed to just one; it seems like a potential alternative to the ever popular PMAG.

Badger Ordinance has a new universal safety selector for AR15's.  How this one is different than ambi selectors, as it can be installed on the right or left hand side of the receiver, because it has detents machined into both sides.  Also, because it's machines instead of forged like most selectors, it gives the user a crisp positive click between safe and fire.

Here is a gigantic version

Badger also has a new Micro FTE muzzle break.

And Last but not least, their M7 light mount (for surefire M300 and M600) with an integrated QD socket.  This mount really stands out because it's specifically designed to hold the light far enough off the rail as to not interfere with the use of a PEQ.

CMMG will be coming out with a new .308.  This rifle will have a sub-2k price point, and feature a tapered barrel profile with CMMG's new key-mod rail.  I think it's overall a pretty sweet package for a good price.

Head Down Products has a new take-down rifle that's quite interesting.  Hopefully they'll offer it as a 12.5" upper only, at least that's what I really want.  The best part is that it doesn't require a proprietary barrel extension, so you can put any barrel into the system.

More incremental changes to the 416...

The only note worthy change being the ambi bolt catch.  It's a simple one piece design that just extends the standard catch out to the right side of the receiver, Remington had this on some of their receivers too; still neither is a good as the LWRC design they have been teasing for years.  To bad us consumers might not get this stuff before the ban...

Look, a 417 with way to much junk on it.  Hk is fulfilling every mall ninja's wet dream here.

Sampson Manufacturing has some great AR accessories.  While nothing they had at the show was new for 2013, all their products are worth giving a second look.  I finally got to play with a set fo their flip-up sights, and I can honestly say they might be the nicest BUIS set you can get.

They also have a new grip that integrates with their Evolution rail.  I really like the stubby version.

The Colt 901 isn't "new" but it's still interesting and hard to find.  After getting to see one up close for the first time, I really want  one.  It sort of sucks that you'd be stuck with the Colt system for .308 configurations, however, the adapter for 5.56 can be used on any regular AR upper, and that's enough for me...

The LWRC M6-IC isn't new, but it's still imposible to find.  Unfortunately, they can't keep up with rifle orders there is no hope for them releasing just the lowers any time in the forceable future.  It's to bad, because the lower is by far the best part of the rifle, and it's by far the best AR lower in existence, and that opinion is a fact.

True ambidextrous goodness.

Lancer, the 3 gunners friend.  Love the lowers, love the carbon, and love the AWM magazines.

I'm liking this carbon stock.

Adjustable break.

Barrier stop.

More fiber.

Magpul was disappointing.  They had some stuff for Mossberg shotguns, but that's been covered to death already...  There were some prototype .308 mags.

They did have a VW Bus with a minigun.

GOOD NEWS!  Rumor has it that the Mega monolithic might be returning....

In the mean time, they have this fantastic new upper.  It uses the same barrel nut as their monolithic system, and it utilizes the new key-mod system (which is great). The tolerances on this system are near perfect, they guarente that the end of the rail will be no more than 3 thousandths off from where it interfaces with the upper (they are talking about maintaining a perfectly flat, continuous 1913 rail), and it does lock up very tight, so I'd believe it.

POF has a new 4lb single stage drop-in trigger.  The theory being along the same lines as a flat trigger, except this forces the operator to put their finger in the same place every time.  I'm not sure about this.

And the latest iteration of their rail.

Remington defense, their piston guns are awesome, but again it's the ambi lowers that I think are really interesting.  The lowers are being made for them by Mega, and they have a modified bolt catch like the Hk 416 to achieve fully ambidextrous controls in a very simple and straight-forward way.  But like everything else new an innovative, we'll likely never get it, companies are so pre-occupied filling orders for panicked buyers, to care about bringing anything new to the market.
