A law passed in 2013 gives people in Kansas the right to carry a concealed firearm in many public places as long as certain security measures were taken, but gave exemptions to a few types of medical facilities, state hospitals and state universities for four years.

The exemptions run out this year, and SB235 would continue the exemptions for public mental health facilities and state facilities. State universities will no longer be exempt. Public hospitals will still be able to prohibit firearms, but they will need to install metal detectors and have armed security.
