Ruger Mini-14, .223 Rem cal
« on: March 13, 2011, 11:01:08 PM »
The Mini-14, chambered for .223 Rem ammunition has not been the most impressive rifle for accuracy unless quite heavily upgraded. At 100 yards and a five shot group - it seems all but guaranteed that one shot at least will totally ruin a group! Perhaps to state 4 MOA is being generous.

It is believed however that the latest Ruger offering has improved matters and as a gun platform it is most compact and is really just a carbine. It's action is based on the Garand action and that is most reliable - with rapid fire being very easy.

This example has always been a fun gun for most part and additions were made regarding a barrel heat shield and a simple muzzle brake. It was a lot of fun - and was sold on some time ago.

Not my first choice of .223/5.56 but if its good enough for the guys in heat its good enough for me  ;D

Will it shoot 5.56 also?

I theory it is best used with .223 Rem - as NATO ammo is not identical as I understand it.  There are either issues with case capacity/pressure and/or possibly a lead issue with bullet ogive and OAL.

When I had mine I did shoot some Wolf ammo but at very least, accuracy was terrible!  It best liked  .223 homeloads tailored to it's taste - but still not a good grouper.

My buddy has one of the new "Ranch Rifle" Mini-14 and it's pretty nice.  I don't think it's really a tack driver but we've never had much of a problem with accuracy with it.  It's fun to shoot but I prefer the AR platform.  They both look good in their own right and both have their advantages and disadvantages.  Ruger does make some nice looking firearms, that's for sure.

I may be wrong but I think either his barrel is stamped for or the docs with it say that his can handle 5.56.  Also, the ones they're selling currently on the SR website show 5.56
