OK, valid questions.
It was the annual Mensa convention, the other individual had just entered - no way of knowing whether or not he had been drinking, or if he had, where.
The membership in general runs the spectrum from full-out liberal to slightly to the right of Genghis Khan, activist to vegetable. The shirt (and others similar) are not uncommon - the event is always over the July 4th weekend - and no 'violent confrontations' have taken place in the 40 years I've been a member.
I was part of the security team for the entire event, and have been so for a good many years.
The entire hotel is a 'no smoking zone'.
The 'Bic flicker' has somewhat of a reputation as - to put it politely - a butt-nugget, in his local group and in the organization at large.
'Our' security is primarily concerned with ensuring anyone attending any of the functions is registered (and wearing their badges), finding errant children, and attempting to defuse 'situations' - anything beyond that, whether 'confrontations' between members, members and outsiders, and especially outsiders, requires notifying hotel security or, if necessary, police/fire/emt. As to being 'on edge' due to any other 'incidents', no, there had been none.
As to the 'opinion from the local PD', that was second or third hand through the head of our security, and after the event had ended.
Hope that answers all.
