NRA-ILA today
made an announcement that there will soon be an announcement regarding their statement on the recent school murders:
Important Statement from the National Rifle Association
The National Rifle Association of America is made up of four million moms and dads, sons and daughters – and we were shocked, saddened and heartbroken by the news of the horrific and senseless murders in Newtown.
Out of respect for the families, and as a matter of common decency, we have given time for mourning, prayer and a full investigation of the facts before commenting.
The NRA is prepared to offer meaningful contributions to help make sure this never happens again.
The NRA is planning to hold a major news conference in the Washington, DC area on Friday, December 21.
Details will be released to the media at the appropriate time.
We do not see it as being NRA's responsibility to make any statement on the tragedy. At most, such a statement should condemn the horrific acts of the mentally ill murderer and offer condolences to the grieving families and friends.
It is reprehensible that politicians, media and other gun control advocates immediately began co-opting the situation to push their own agendas, going so far as reporting whichever sensationalized headline would grab attention with no regard for the report's veracity.
Some individuals and organizations, as they often do, have a knee-jerk reaction to take emotion-based actions because it will make them feel better even if there is no benefit from that action (and, frequently, unintended negative consequences). It is unfortunate, albeit understandable to a degree, that such heated emotion is at the forefront of a headlong rush into a push for renewing already-failed legislation, attacking organizations, businesses and responsible citizens and other such misguided behavior. We hope that supporters of basic individual rights will be unyielding in that support and resist "
feel good, do nothing" measures.
